Shine Your Light

"The light shines in darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:5

Have you ever seen the day disappear before your eyes?  As the photographer was taking this picture, she watched as the storm came in off of Lake Erie in Fairport Harbor, Ohio.  She couldn't believe her eyes but the proof is in the picture.  Just moments before, the sky was bright as mid day.  Then, just like that the storm blew in and changed the entire situation.

I can remember being seven years old when my dad would take us to the exact same beach.  I remember seeing the dark clouds roll in, which, at that age was terrifying.  My dad, however, thought it was the coolest thing and would wait until the storm was almost to shore.  Just when the rain would begin to hit our heads, we would make our escape in his black '78 Trans Am with the gold bird on the hood, racing down Route 2 to beat the storm while we watched through the tinted T-tops.

Life can feel like this sometimes as the day seems to disappear for a while and the dark finds its place.  It can even look like it's the end of the story, but that is not the case.  The above picture shows us that even though the sky is as dark as night, the light is behind it.  The light has not gone away.  The storm just took precedence in our view.  The fact remains that the it was still day and darkness cannot take that away.

I would imagine some of you are in a season where it looks dark.  You may feel like it's the end of the story, but remember the words from John 1:5, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."  Did you see that last part?  Yep, the truth is that the darkness has not overcome the light.  Yes the storm rolled in and made the day seem as night, but the fact remains that the above picture, along with your season is bright as day behind the dark.

If you believe that Jesus died so that you may have eternal life (John 3:16), then your biggest problem is solved.  So this storm, this rush of clouds, rain, thunder and wind is but a situation.  Your light will shine, it is still shining.  It's time to live like light behind the clouds.  Even in the middle of the storm, the darkness cannot and will not overcome it!
